Ordered a sandwich that claimed to come on a croissant...it came on white bread, and with cheese, which was not listed on the menu. Ordered a shrimp salad...it came with no shrimp. Ordered a coffee drink...it didn't come. All of this brilliance executed by a woman who constantly whined about how overwhelmed she was, yet the place was nearly empty. Skip this place.

My BLT was made from some weird industrial-grade bacon. I like the 7-seed loaf, but the sandwiches are awful. Charmless place, just go in, get the bread, and get out.

Well, its sandwiches, and not of the greatest sorts. I ate there maybe twice at most, and now I just shrug when I drive/walk by. Bread was good, though.

this place is cool. free wifi and good danishes. nothing that blew my mind but i'd come back. very clean and not crowded are always a plus. big tables if you need a lot of space for your laptop too!

Simply amazing! I started coming to this location during my lunch hour and have been back every day since! The service I've received is phenomenal; the staff have consistently been both friendly and courteous, and frankly, people I enjoy having a conversation with. The food itself is absolutely delicious and always reasonably priced. Even the atmosphere is so unlike any other establishment. This recently remodeled location turned out beautifully and its peaceful surroundings allow you to actually converse with those around you, or take some time to do some light reading quietly. Highly recommend!

Amazing staff, the nicest cashiers and it look so much more updated since the remodel, Estes points for having Peet's Coffee too! Caramel latte is made amazingly!

Food is good but service is bloody slow. Also don't ask for espresso macchiato cause you'll get a ... cappuccino. Even though they have a Pete's they are clueless about coffee.

Too many extra loud rude women and an abundance of toddlers. If you want screaming kids and loud women, sit and eat here otherwise do takeout. The almond croissants are worth the trip.

Had to write a positive review, because I'm shocked by all the negative ones for Le Boulanger. It's conveniently located, the food is fresh, good, and well priced. I always find the staff friendly and capable- and I am pretty picky! I work nearby and eat here often. No complaints!

Wow my 100th review? Can you believe it? It's only been 4 hours since I've started yelping seriously and a ROTD, many generous compliments later, I am writing comfortably at my 100th review with better confidence! I know this is not crazy like many elite yelp gurus here, but still a nice benchmark to have for me. Okay, maybe not 4 hours but 4 weeks, but you get the point! I was gonna write this milestone review on Le Colonial, but I really felt that a few more visits will do this adequate Asian fusion more justice, as I really ordered the wrong dishes because Randy F was being lazy and replied me too late!! jk. So I am dedicating this review to one of my favorite WiFi and study spots in the Peninsula, for me being the perpetual student that I am. Cough.. Graduate school, too old for college. :( I don't know about you but I much prefer to study at a chatty, boisterous environment, it makes me focus and I can stay at the same spot from the morning until they close. The key here is I NEED noise around me. Yes, louder the better, the longer the crowd can entertain me the higher grades I get. In this regard, Le Boulanger is no doubt, my ideal studying haven that is just 2 blocks away from my house. This is a really big bakery place, easily puts Starbucks to shame in term of spacious seating, and the sheer size. Everything is clean and tidy, you won't see none of the left over bread crumbs, or unfinished plates at any table. This place is very packed during the peak times at morning and noon, which is perfect to keep me up for my around the clock, undivided focus on project and assignment. The WiFi here is top notch, effortlessly easy to setup, and nothing annoying to sign up, set up, or subscribe. This is no bull shit FREE WiFi high speed service. Throughout the years in Le Boulanger, I haven't experienced one router meltdown, I am truly impressed. The food here is definitely Le Boulanger's weak side, I am not saying that it's not good, it is just simply overpriced for the quality. A hot pastrami sandwich with a drink can easily set you back $10+(drinks like Diet Coke!), and it is surely more expensive for a caffeine addict that I am. It features Tully's coffee here for you coffee experts, though I have no idea what it means at all. I have tried many different sandwiches here and they are nothing special, but seriously they are just the excuse for me to sit here for about 6+ hours. The best sandwich here is the Cold California Turkey Breast sandwich, the bread is a bit too crunchy for me, I'd opt for the soft, French bread instead. If you too, trying to study in the boring, quiet to death study rooms in school library without much success, Le Boulanger may just very well be your ticket to a more efficient study habit. Chances are, you'll see me as the nerd in the corner that has access to the the highly fought over wall plug. :P

Ok after a few attempts to like this place I finally have to write a review. Came in for a simple cheese danish. The manager MARIA was very rude and shouldn't be working in customer service. After she swiped my card she just put the slip to sign along with my card on the counter and turned away.. There was no "please sign" or anything..Not even a single word. I knew I was supposed to sign it but decided to test her. So I said "thanks" and started to walk away then she says "no I need you to sign". Then I said to her "oh you didn't say to". Then she didn't even apologize. Dumbass. Treat your customers politely. MARIA, How did you ever become manager? On another visit I ordered an egg sandwich and it took forever. By the way the sandwich was pretty gross and oily that I barely finished half. No one was even in the food prep area to make the sandwich. After a god ten minutes waiting (and watching) the girl who took my order ended up making my sandwich. Service is WAY TOO SLOW and employees are RUDE.

Hate this place. Noisy and not super clean. Pastries are very sugary and the coffee is not to my liking. My kids like this place a lot for breakfast, not usually a good sign...

The few times I have been here it's been way below average at best with the super slow and complacent staff, and the lettuce a bit old and slimy to be classed as "fresh". But this time takes the cake and has re-inforced why I won't go here EVER AGAIN. After placing my order and getting to sit in front of the open kitchen to watch what really happens back there, I noticed the staff swaggering around, joking and not really taking an sense of urgency to fill their orders. One of the food pre guys threw paper and leftover sandwich food on the floor purposefully missing the trash can so another girl had to go clean up after him. Then the same woman who cleaned up his mess brushed the trash can with her gloved hands, and leaned on it then I saw the most disgusting thing ever.... without changing her gloves, she took the same hands she used to brush over the trash can and she wiped down the food prep area with her gloved hand... reached for a sandwich, cut it - packaged it up and it went on it's way to an oblivious customer. GROSS GIRL! Even better part....I checked the bag to make sure my soup was the right size (as I have left there without food or with the smaller sizes before) and she said "let me check"... Flashbacks of her hands all over the dirty trash can inspired me to ask her to please change her gloves before she touches my food as I had just seen her actions. She gave me a dirty stare and looked at the other person behind the counter and snickered at me right in front of me. How rude can staff at this place be? Quite a fair question to ask someone to change their gloves when you had just observed them use the same gloves for trash can wiping. Just because you are wearing gloves, doesn't mean they are clean girlfriend. Maybe your hands inside are clean (and sweaty) but whatever you touch, goes into the sandwiches you are making. NASTY!!!

Set right in the middle of downtown San Mateo. Figured this would be a good walk-in sandwich place... I had the California Fresh. No bueno in my humble opinion. Everything was fresh, but there's was just too much of their special mustard. It was overbearing! I felt like wasabi was in the sandwich! And boy - did the smell roll up my nose! My gf had the club sandwich which was a lot better! The honey-smoked ham was delicious. Nothing extraordinary. The ambiance is a bit of more like a corporate caf. Very dull, felt like 80s back in there. It could have been the older senior citizens there (I can tell this is a older crowd on weekends!).

I have no idea why there are only 2.5 stars for Le Bu. It's always tasty! I have only tried a few menu items but am so in love with each. First of all, the turkey cranberry. It's like Thanksgiving all year round. Although I wouldn't mind if they started to offer cream cheese on the sandwich. Second I love the California Fresh sandwich. Their dutch crunch roll is ah-mazing! Last, their seasonal butternut squash soup is a staple in my diet from Thanksgiving until January when they cycle it out. They really need to have it all year round! Great lunch spot, not too crowded.

I live nearby and this is absolutely my go-to sandwich place. I always order the California Fresh and it's hard to mess that one up. It is always fantastic. I see a lot of complaints about service, but I actually never sit in this bakery. Instead, I use it for pick-up, every single time. I order by phone or online and they always have my order ready. The online system is actually wonderful and you can edit every single order. They can have it ready within 15 minutes by phone and probably a half hour if you order through the internet. Generally this is where my family goes before movies or roadtrips and I highly recommend it for take-out.

The store looks great! Nice remodel. They have the best sandwiches hands down. Dutch crunch and sourdough rolls are my fav. For sandwiches it will always be the California fresh!

You really don't ask for much in the morning. All I really need is my food and octane in a quickness from someone happier than I am (b4 I get my coffee). That being said... This was the unhappiest, slowest, and most lethargic group of ladies to ever work at a le bou! 15 minutes for a sandwich! When I asked about it, the cashier said "that's why I've been warning everyone it's a 20 minute wait". Um yeah, so u forgot to warn little old me lady. That being said, the sandwich was delicious, but best served at the le bou in Los altos where employees are happy for your business

Horrible service- the fat red haired girl and the fat short black haired girl could not have been any more RUDE. Horrible Food- my sandwich was a piece of shit between two slices of bread. I have BETTER SANDWICHES AT MY SCHOOL CAFETERIA the restaurant is ugly and abysmal. DON'T GIVE THIS PLACE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY!!!!!!!

I have always had a great time here.... but I smile a lot. the bread is THE BOMB. the service is okay, but they are busy and working in a sandwich shop dealing with self righteous bitty's that need *this much* mayo, no not *that* much. sorta pricey for a sandwich, but a great sandwich nonetheless.

  • Allison S.

I love this place. I come here and to they're other locations all the time. I love the combos. I usually go for the sandwich/salad combo for $8.95 with no drink. It's a good deal, a bit pricey and it's only a half of each, but the salad is huge. If you order a full salad as an entree it could easily feed 2 people, it's gigantic. Lots of hot and cold sandwiches to choose from, delicious salads and yummy soups that rotate weekly. A little overpriced, but worth it when you're on your lunch break and want something good to eat!

Yeah, they ignore those pagers they give you, which is freaking annoying. Portabello and caprese sandwiches are very tasty, though even after cooling on their counter for many minutes while I waited for the buzzer.

I've loved Le Boulanger for over 15 years. They make the most wonderful bread and sandwiches and breakfast pastries. My favorites are the Hot Chicken and Bacon sandwich and the Le Grand Roast Beef. Soups like Cream of Tomato, Butternut Squash and Indian Curry hit the spot. The very best sourdough in the whole Bay Area. My friends in Sacramento salivate when I export the loaves on my visits. Almond danish and cinnamon rolls can't be beat. The service can be a little slow at peak hours but they always have the nicest, friendliest people. I just figure it's the price I pay for freshness and custom orders. I have yet to find ANYONE with more innovations in their ingredients and sandwich combinations. Love them!

I've been coming here for several years. It's my favorite coffee shop / lunch bar in San Mateo by far. The restaurant is big enough that you can settle into a table with your laptop without feeling squished, and they have free wi-fi. The people are friendly and patient. They take CCs and have a soda fountain so you can get as many refills as you want. They open at 6am in case you want to come in first thing in the morning. It's just a relaxed atmosphere and a nice place to hang out.

  • Susanne W.

Went there for lunch today. Ordering was easy only 1 customer ahead of us. We got the pager and set down. We sat there for 10-15 min. Only one person is making the sandwiches. We saw the guy put up food on the counter and typing in a number. After 7 min the women walks buy and puts in a number and surprise our pager lights up and our sandwich and soup have been sitting on top off the counter for all this time...... Must be very difficult to punch in the number #9. The Tomato soup was horrible. I think any soup from a can tastes better. Did not finish it. Tasted like corn starch and beef stock, according to the menu it is vegetarian. The tuna sandwich was okay but the salad could have been fresher. I will not go back. Subway is cheaper and the quality seams better there too.

My Company got a Business Lunch Catered by the San Mareo Location and it was more than we could have asked for. The sandwiches were the perfect size and delicious but the dessert was over the top. The cookies and strawberries were amazing! Thank you!

Time of visit: 3 PM The soup was "all gone" (no offers for alternatives). A family after me left because the soup was gone (NO SOUP FOR YOU!!!). The girl behind the counter excused the establishment's lack of soup by saying, "We were really busy today.". The salad I ordered was fine. The girl behind the counter never asked me if I wanted a drink with that (they ALWAYS ask, even at the diviest dives). The view of unswept garbage all over the floor in the semi-open kitchen was disconcerting. The guy who ordered a Bay Shrimp Melt and the worker who insisted the sandwich waiting for a patron on the counter (getting cold) was a "Bay Melt" were amusing...especially when the patron sat back down to wait for his "Bay Shrimp Melt". The annoying lanky snowboarder kid who was hanging around on his day off talking to co-workers was irritating and getting in the way of good service. I guess they have free Wi-Fi. That's redeeming. But they have a service problem....just need a dose of customer service 101.

It's late Sunday morning. I needed to find a cafe in the area that had free wifi this morning. I didn't know where to go so Le Boulanger was recommended. I've been to a few of these. This one is fine but doesn't stand out as being anything exceptional. I'm happy with the strong internet connection, the free soda refills, and a sandwich that was tasty. But, again, nothing to scream home about. There are quite a few people here but I'm happy to have a relatively large table to myself that I can spread out on (work to do). There are other cafes out there that are much more quirky, fun, and energetic but this one will do for now.

Had a roasted eggplant sandwich after yoga the other day and while i scarfed it down quick - I was really hungry - it was drenched in vinaigrette dressing. Luckily it was paired with a crispy ciabatta bread so it sort of balanced each other out texture-wise. My friend had the turkey & chicken pesto sandwich but the sourdough bread was so hard, she had to eat it seperately because it hurt the roof of her mouth! I give them credit for being a chain & offering a sandwich a bit more unique than your typical deli, tho I think this location itself needs a new makeover in general. Helpful that they give you a little buzzer so you know when your order is ready. Oh yeah, and free wi-fi.

Horrible place. Worst lunch I've had in San Mateo. Waited around 10 minutes for ONE sandwich. It was thrown at me in a to go bag. Half the sandwich was soggy cuz it was drenched in olive oil. I couldnt finish it and gave it to a co-worker famous for eating anything and everything. He actually took a bite and didn't want it. That's how bad it was. Expensive too. So many other great places I can't imagine why you'd want to come here.

Wow, I was actually shocked by the overall rating for this place! I used to live down in San Jose and there was a Le Boulanger next to my gym so I often stopped on the way back to grab my usual: roasted eggplant on nine grain, no onions, dressing on the side. I always asked for the dressing on the side because I totally agree that if you don't they over do it. I don't find this sandwich to be amazing or anything but it's a quick option for a nutritious vegetarian sandwich - most places serve only cheese, sprout and cucumber sandwiches, sometimes with avocado. However, after a while, I found the roasted eggplant got way too oily and over seasoned. I don't know if that location changed cooks or whether the restaurant changed their recipe (cause I stumbled upon this same problem at a couple other places), but I simply stopped going. This was about 6 months ago... I've since moved and switched gyms twice and this location is once again next door to my gym. I've been to this location in the past while passing through San Mateo or whatever and it was ok - nothing bad but nothing to rave about either, so I haven't been back since I moved to San Mateo. However, I was strapped for time today and figured this was better than nothing! I ordered my food and it was ready within 5 minutes...I grabbed my bag and drove back to the office... I was totally taken by my sandwich - the bread was (notice the past tense as I have practically swallowed it whole!) very fresh and the mixed greens crisp with freshness. The roasted vegetables were tender and dabbed with oil and seasoning. It was simply perfect - just the way I would make it at home! SO, I just *had* to write about it on Yelp and so here I am... So, as you can see, I am very surprised to hear of all the bad reviews...I thought this location was great and my sandwich was amazing...I'll go back...and of course, if need be, I'll post an update!!!

i've never actually bought anything here, but i give it 3 stars for giving me a funny story to tell. it was a nice sunny afternoon, and my friend wanted to buy some pastries after eating lunch. so we decided to go on a hunt for a bakery nearby. we read the sign "le boulanger: the baker" and we were like "SCOREEE!", happy to have found a place. we go inside, and start looking at the selection available. there were less choices than i expected, but it's okay cause i wasn't planning on buying anything anyways. we were just standing there discussing which ones looked best and i pointed out a carrot muffin that looked pretty good. all of a sudden the worker goes "do you want to try a sample?" i looked at him for a second thinking "did i hear correctly?" i was really confused and curious as to how he was going to let us sample this muffin, but we said "sure!" soooo...he takes out the muffin, puts it on a table, cuts it in half, and gives us HALF A MUFFIN EACH!! i was SHOCKED...and hesitant to take it because i was unsure on whether he would charge us for it or not... in the end, my friend ended up buying another carrot muffin and a chocolate croissant. it would've felt almost mean to not buy another muffin since he essentially just...gave one to us. hahahaha we held our laughter on the way out the door and let it all out once we were outside. if only every place did that... :)

They offer a pretty tasty sandwiches here. Granted, at $7+ per sandwich, that's how I'd expect them. Each one comes with a pickle and a bag of chips. Wow, Original Lays. Service has been mixed. I've experienced the full gamut here: from completely uninterested to enthusiastic and helpful. Go figure. The freshly baked goods sets them above the average deli. The higher prices offset the rating to a 3. thankyou

I went here when it was conveniently across the street and down a half block from 24 Hour Fitness. My Italian sandwich and soup were only OK. This is before I rediscovered Le Boulanger in Mountain View and their yummy chicken pesto sandwich.

I went here at about 3 or 4 in the afternoon on a weekday. It was slow and the youngsters behind the counter were friendly and patient as I was a new-comer and didn't know what to order. I know I love the turkey and avocado sandwich on a croissant from Boudin and was looking for something similar. I got one and it was good, came with chips and a crisp pickle. Nice sandwich spot and right next door to a Jamba Juice. Lovely.

The first place I went for lunch on my first day of work was the last time I'll go here. The service was slow and erratic and none of the employees seemed to know what they were doing. The person in our group that ordered first got his food last. My sandwich came out fast but wasn't what I ordered. No one knew when their order was up because the employees didn't bother to buzz the pagers they handed out. Then when I finally did receive my sandwich it wasn't that great. There are a ton of places to go in downtown San Mateo for lunch and I would go to any of them before I returned here.

They'd get an extra star if it wasn't a rip-off. Their margarita panini is great but small and expensive. The miniature bag of crappy Lays potato chips they include definitely does not compliment the paninis! Their crispy (think Rice Krispies) chocolate chip cookies are to die for though!

Unlimited coffee refill? Woot Walking by, I always thought this place was fancy. Turns out, it's actually ok :) the place looks like it's run by a family, and is a pretty chill, down-to-earth type of place. The coffee is perfect--basic down-to-earth coffee with strong aroma and smooth creamy milk. Nothing fancy or crazy for picky drinkers, but just the kind of coffee I am always in need of. There's free wifi, and even outside seats. The clientele can vary, sometimes with families, or old retirees sipping coffee, or even VCs giving pitching advice--this is definitely a common person type of neighborhood place Worth going back again and again

This place is a nice change from Starbucks or Peet's. My husband and I come here when we want more than a pastry but less than a traditional sit-down breakfast. The breakfast sandwiches here are very tasty! The coffee here is excellent as well, they brew Peet's. On weekdays this place can be a little slow, but other than that we really enjoy this spot for a semi-on the run breakfast.

Not a fan of their breakfast sandwiches. I came in because I received a buy one get one free (any entree) from the 49'ers game and wanted to try their early morning meals. I asked to add sausage and happily was willing to pay extra of course, but they overcharged me first. After 3 mins and manager approvals, they got it right, but then charged me extra for the second BOGO. The "BOGO" (no fine offer) means that I pay full price for one and get 2nd same price, not for extra. The food also took about 15 mins to make (i'm happy it was fresh, but I was the only person ordering food), and the sausage egg cheese croissant which was very average, nothing special. The florentine sandwich with pesto and egg whites on sourdough was also blah, nothing special here. I probably won't be back.

Been back in the Peninsula especially at this location and service has gotten better!! The nice guy at the counter even offered to sell me the $5.50 Halloween cookies for $2.00 (two days old). Great deal! Good business guy. I'm a sucker for carbs and I do enjoy a great variety not sticking to one in particular, so this is a good option with the others that I already frequent. I hope they will continue to improve their service (with a smile) so that returning customers like myself will be willingly support their delicious pastries! FYI - they do brew PEET'S COFFEE! Sweet!! Cheers!

I stumbled upon this spot while looking for food and a cozy spot to chill, and Le Boulanger provided just that. The food satisfied my hunger but not my taste buds. My turkey cranberry sandwich consisted of sourdough bread, oven-roasted turkey breast, cranberry sauce, lettuce, and mayonnaise. It was bland even with the cranberry sauce, which looked like mere jelly. Be careful while eating as the cranberry sauce dripped some juices. Half a pickle and small bag of chips were included in the price of this $7.75 sandwich. Despite the reasonable portions, I wish I had gotten more flavor for my money. To satisfy my sweet tooth, I got the petite maple scone for $1.75. The glaze provided all the sweetness and flavor to this otherwise tasteless pastry. They had an assortment of other treats like brownies, muffins, and coffee cakes, but their selection struck me as small and limited for a bakery. The warm and cozy environment is conducive for eating and studying. There's an abundance of booths and seats spread throughout the spacious, well-lit room. Above all, Starbuck's free wifi is accessible here. Dirty dishes ruined this otherwise perfect environment. The dishes on the table beside me were left untouched for two hours, even when business wasn't at all busy in the late afternoon. Messes left by previous customers throughout the room also remained for long periods of time. Le Boulanger is a cozy alternative to Starbucks for studying and free wifi, but I'd go elsewhere in pursuit of good food.

The food is good, service is good, and the coffee is boring. Lol I like this place overall the atmosphere is nice and relax. You don't feel like you need to rush. The crowd is older people though not many young teens hanging out in here. ( no trouble lol) this is a great study group place for college students as well. Overall everything is great except for the boring coffee.

I had something really horrible happen to me at my first choice of sandwich destinations today, so I decided to fall back on a default option. This location is right in the middle of downtown San Mateo. It's a larger store with lots of space to sit down. I ordered a turkey cranberry sandwich. The sandwich was really good with soft sourdough, savory turkey, and sweet, tangy cranberry sauce. I actually prefer this bread to something like their Dutch Crunch which is way too abrasive and can rip teeth out. I wouldn't say it was the super friendliest bunch here, but they were attentive and quick.

A terrible dining experience for a chain bakery/cafe that I've always enjoyed. This place was empty on a weekday when we walked in - a time where the staff should've been able to process orders fairly quickly. Unfortunately, we killed more than half of our lunch hour just waiting for our food to arrive (basic soup/salad combos). On top of that, the salad was quite sparse - definitely not what I remembered from past experiences in the San Jose location I enjoyed very much.

I have been going to this place for a few years. I stopped going for a period of time because the overall quality went down. I gave it a second chance after a few months; by the time I went back they have changed the management. It made a significant difference and I started coming back more frequently. It is hard for a chain-cafe/bakery to keep high standards as nobody has a vested interest ( such as an owner) and they operate with low-wage employees. However I like the reward system for loyal customers (the free lunch, coffee, bread or pastry) The breakfast and lunch sandwiches are good. But what made the difference for me and motivated me to write a note in Yelp was the great service provided more than a few times by an assistant manager there; his name is MOISES. He is diligent, polite, enthusiastic and his good attitude makes the difference.

their customer service (employees at the register are A+, very friendly) i've ordered a few to-go's and while the food is consistently tasty, the wait for to-go orders are long (even when it doesn't appear to be very busy) so i try to call ahead. i typically order the primavera salad with chicken and sometimes when i'm feeling famish i'll ADD the california fresh (i think thats what its called) - turkey, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes, etc sandwich on dutch crunch. my only criticism is what i noticed when waiting for my to-go order... their stock of chips (that come with sandwiches) had arrived. they were restocking and a bag of chips fell on the floor. not a big deal i suppose except when ordering your sandwich (that comes with chips) they put the bag of chips inside the bag with your sandwich... maybe its just me but it made me wonder... what else is dropped, picked up and put inside the food?!*&^

First visit here today. My husband and I ordered the California Fresh. The bread was Dutch crunch. The bread was so hard, it put pressure on my jaw. My jaw popped. My husbands sandwich was the same. The contents of the sandwich was good. I only ate half. When I went back up to the counter to get a to-go bag ( figured my dog could have it) I noticed another patron had removed the Dutch crunch bread from their sandwich also. Don't think I will be back.

***RIP OFF REPORT**** Be careful at this location, I think they systematically may be trying to double charge patrons. I ordered 5 items, and the manager (who took my order), charged my for all 5 items, one of which was a soda. Then when I got the food, no soda. No prob yet, simple mistake. I mentioned to the guy who pulls my food together the soda was forgotten and he gave me a glass to fill. Filled the glass with soda and the store manager told me to wait she needs to charge me for the soda (and did it in an accusatory tone). I calmly mentioned I already paid for the soda. She then pulled out a receipt and it showed no soda paid for. I thought did she forget to ring it up? But I was certain I saw the soda on the receipt, but unfortunately threw it in the garbage. I then tried to explain again, and their staff became rude. I ended up digging through the garbage, finding the receipt that showed the charge (and yes they charged) and the manager just said must have been a mistake. Then I pressed saying how did her receipt not show the soda. No explanation and she tried to brush me off. She was still very rude. How did their receipt show the no soda? Call it just a hunch right now, but I strongly suspect some serious shady behavior going on. Maybe just at the store manager level, but at a minimum, pore over your receipt and avoid using credit cards!!!

I went to there with my friend in afternoon. I ordered a pastry and hot coffee. But coffee was not fresh. That seemed making couple hours ago. I asked Cashier also store maneger to make fresh coffee. They said no problem coffee. they didn't make fresh coffee. I asked them if it's no problem what time did you make it, do you taste it ?they didn't answer and ignore it. It was the worst customer service. BTW pastry taste was not bad.

Now I know what other people are saying... I am not sure how a bagel sandwich with asiago bagel, egg, veggies and descent amount of cheese can be bland, but it was. My husband got asiago bagel sandwich with bacon, cheese and egg, and it was also bland. Cheeses they use do not have much flavor. I think they use cheap processed cheeses that melt well, but have no flavor. Before leaving, I got a chocolate croissant and French baguette. The chocolate croissant tastes good, but I would not call it croissant. It is more like a soft bread. I hope the French baguette will be descent. I still have some credit on my gift card, so I will go back to try other pastries, but based on what we had so far, I am not expecting much. When I want good pastries, I would go to Copenhagen in Burlingame. I thought their service was fine. A big plus is that they have outdoor seating since we have a dog.

This place is one of those places that you keep hoping you'll have a better experience but continues to disappoint. They really have the "people eat with their eyes" concept down, but they really must think people literally eat with their eyes because it it's definitely not tasty in my mouth.

I was in Hillsborough for the night and my friend suggested I stop by this place to get a quick breakfast and coffee. I found TV parking (On T.V. they always show the person finding a spot right in front of the place they are going to.) and briefly looked at the menu. I found a hot breakfast sandwich with sausage, egg, provolone, and roasted red pepper. I ordered this and a medium coffee. Shortly thereafter the sandwich was ready and I proceeded to eat it. Immidiately I asked for some salsa, or something because it was dry and not that flavorful. They offered me tabasco sauce. I took the rest to go and headed out. The bread on the sandwich was the best part of it.

i came here with my boyfriend and his family before my flight back to NYC. I got the breakfast sandwich, which wasn't bad at all. The place is nice and cozy. A good place to just relax and get some work done.

Large, attractive dining room to enjoy your baked goods and coffee. Excellent pastries. The bread pudding is delicious. Large assortment of breads. This is downtown San Mateo. Parking can be difficult. Outdoor seating available.

Didn't think they could mess up a croissant at a bakery, but somehow they did. Lacked the flakiness and buttery goodness.

Was in the neighborhood and decided to pop in for a quick sandwich for lunch. To my surprise, they offer breakfast omelet sandwiches all day! I love brekkie sandwiches! Ordered up a sausage cheddar omelet sandwich. Cheddar was nicely melted in between the crispy bagel. It's hard to get this wrong, but they did a pretty good job. They also offer Tully's coffee (self serve) with several choices: Kona, House, Dark Roast, Decaf... Free Internet is a plus!

Wow. I ordered an iced tea. Ten minutes later, the barista hands me a cup of ice water with a tea bag jammed gingerly in the side. "It's going to take a while," she said, "to steep, I mean." WHAT. I tried to kindly explain to her how to make iced tea (i.e., start with hot water) to no avail. Wound up just getting a refund. Getting a refund was easier. Again, wow. Just wow.

I loved the comfy space it provided for me -- had to kill time for 2 hours and it certainly was better than hanging out in Starbucks as the booth was roomy and the ambiance, bright and cheery. Unfortunately the Caesar salad was underdressed so not much taste. The plate was also heaping with greens so it kept slipping off the plate -- bigger plate needed perhaps or maybe something deeper? The greens were super fresh though and the grilled chicken on top was very moist and tasty. Coffee was burnt :-( Will probably go back if I need to kill time, will probably order from the pastry section though. There's street parking or if full, parking at back - $1/ hour.

I stopped in here after getting a Chai next door and was delighted to see that they had breakfast. I ordered a bagel with eggs and bacon that was spectacular! The bagel was soft and warm like it just came out of the oven. The eggs weren't overcooked, but fluffy and good texture. The bacon - well, everyone knows that bacon makes everything better. I also took home a loaf of whole grain bread that even the picky teenager liked. She finished the loaf and asked me to go back for more. See you there! TIP: Street parking is plentiful, but bring money for the meters.

I ordered a soup. The service at the counter was poor, the soup was slooshed onto a bare plate with a stale piece of bread, and the soup was pretty horrible.

I was happy with the morning cinnamon roll I got here. Sweet and tasty, it hit the spot. The place was clean and bright, and I was able to filch free wifi from the Starbucks next door. The real issue that I had was that this is not a place to hang out - unless your computer has major battery life. Only two plugs in the whole joint (and one taken up by a guy using the restaurant as his office - ick!), it's not a place to linger. The folks were friendly - no issues there. But you also have to pay for parking.

My family and I stumbled upon this place after church to have some breakfast. I didn't get a chance to look at the menu when I walked in so I just decided to order an almond croissant while my parents ordered ham and cheese omelette sandwiches. My mom goes up to the cashier and says, "I'll have a ham and cheese" Then the cashier replies, with attitude, "Ham and cheese... sandwich?? omelette??" My mom, "Omelette Sandwich." So rude. SO RUDE. When I ordered, I was straight forward and she was sweet to me, but she was so cruel to my mom and my step-dad. Ordered, paid, and waited for our food. Almond croissant was like any other buttery sweet thing. Nothing too special. My step-dad found a hair in his sandwich and they didn't offer a new one, offer a refund, nor did a manager come out to apologize. And by the way, I took one of their menus home to look it over. Ham and Cheese ONLY refers to the omelette sandwich so there should have been NO need for the rude reply. Definitely won't return any time soon.

I love how this place is so conveniently located near my work. When I'm not craving any sushi, burritos, or any rice plates, I go here for a nice sandwich. My two favorite sandwiches are Turkey Cranberry and California Fresh. The best thing about their sandwiches is their bread. I always get my sandwiches with slice sourdough bread. Mmmmm.... On cold day, I like to warm myself up with a cup of clam chowder accompanied with a dinner roll.

BEST Sweet Strawberry Mango Spinach Salad. E V E R. And I have never been a fan of fruit with my greens. And I've always wanted my salad drenched in ranch. I don't know what went so wrong (with me) that it's so right (with Le Boulanger) But this... I'm addicted to!!! I don't care how bad their service is or if their sandwiches suck. Or if the wait time has been too long for other people. I work in the area and I order online using Waiter.com . My order has always been ready when I arrive during my lunch time. Bottom line. I'll keep getting my salad here because it really is that damn good. TRY IT!

Not pleased with this establishment on two counts -- sandwich pedestrian. Nothing special and I'm pretty sure Dijon mustard and albacore tuna aren't supposed to talk to each other. Not tasty in my world. Huge, thick rings of red onion rather than thinly sliced. It didn't feel like a party in my mouth. More like a heavyweight fight. Service - took the cashier a while to make her way to us (no other folks in line) and when she did we had the *doin' ya a favor* attitude goin'; no hello, good-bye, thank you, nuttin'. I can be slow to a boil so I didn't really get p.o.ed till the sandwiches came. The cashier asked us if we wanted chips when we paid (chip rack next to cash register) and the hubs and I decided to split a bag of BBQ chips. Didn't know the sandwiches actually came with chips. None of this is earth shattering but all of it together plus the $20 we threw down for two sandwich lunches says, "No. Never again."

I came here to pick up sandwiches for lunch. My boyfriend ordered a California Fresh with no onions, mayo, and dijon mustard on a sourdough roll. I decided to order a Le Club sandwich with no cheese and mustard ($7.75). A Le Club sandwich has turkey breast, smoked ham, peppered bacon, jack cheese, lettuce, tomato, and honey mustard inside a toasted sliced Straun bread. I ordered the sandwiches to go, and I was pleased to see a pickle and a bag a chip when I got home. I was also very happy that both our sandwiches were made correctly! The Le Club was very good! There was generous amounts of turkey, ham, and bacon inside the sandwich. The toasted sliced Staun tasted great, too. I think I have found my favorite Le Boulanger sandwich. =)

I should have checked Yelp before I came here, hopefully you do and skip this place. I had just finished an errand in San Mateo and was super hungry - Le Boulanger called out to me with its promise of great sandwiches on fresh bread. A well made sandwich is one of my favorite things to eat but Le Boulanger did not deliver. It was 1:15pm and with only 4 people in line ahead of me it still took about 8 minutes until I placed my order - the one cashier was super slow and finally another employee took note and started helping. I noted a manager who was just strolling around in the back not helping expedite orders - lame. It took another 10 minutes for my sandwich to come out and with the open kitchen layout I was able to observe the staff on the cold prep side. They were so ridiculously slow. They were moving with zero sense of urgency and were joking around with each other in full view of anyone in the cafe. The sandwiches they were making looked horrible. Most were on what looked like thin slices of wonder bread. I held out hope my hot Margherita al Fresco (ciabatta, whole milk mozzarella, basil leaves, tomato, vinaigrette dressing) would live up to my expectations. The bread was weak. Caked with flour on the bottom and no real flavor. You can't screw up cheese but the tomatoes were not ripe and the basil didn't have much flavor. My favorite part was the pickle they gave me. The price was reasonable at $7.75 with a small bag of chips I didn't want/eat but I still won't go back. peace, love, and good booze were not found here ~ chase

Convenient place for mobile workers to grab a bite and get some work done. It's right next door to the Stabucks, but so much quieter and easier to find seating (as long as it's not during the lunch hour rush!). Fernando remembers my name and always says a cheerful hello. I haven't had anything other than friendly service from the rest of the crew. Definitely a nicer ambiance since the remodel.

I work nearby. The first time I ate here, I got your standard sandwich and ended up with food poisoning. About 6 months later I was convinced to give it another try. Again, I got food poisoning. I have a weaker stomach than most...but I think two times is enough.

the place to be for good coffee and pastries and bread. i give christine, the store manager a+ for customer service. i just wish she could rub on some of her attentiveness and enthusiasm with the rest of the staff esp. on busy hours. the newly-remodeled dining area is cozy and clean. the bathrooms is decent.
